On August 31, 2023, a revised version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, was published by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Employers must use the latest version of the I-9 form starting November 1, 2023. Employees hired prior to November 1, 2023, and who have already completed the outdated version of Form I-9 do not have to fill out the new Form I-9 (dated 08/01/2023).
A few highlights on the changes made to Form I-9 are (1) it is now designed to be a fillable form on tablets and mobile devices, (2) several sections have been moved to be standalone supplements, (3) there is a revised list of Acceptable Documents, (4) there is a reduction of instructions, (5) and a check box has been added which allows employers to indicate that they have examined Form I-9 remotely.
